In order to be effective and provide the feeling of a hug a childrens weighted blanket should be approximately 10% of your child’s body weight.

Choose the size that will fully cover your child from the neck down to their feet, but not bigger than the size of the bed frame. A weighted blanket should never be used to restrict a child’s movements and should never cover the face or head.

Do not use a weighted blanket for a child less then 15kg and who cannot remove the blanket independently. We do not recommend weighted products to be used for children with breathing difficulties, epilepsy, serious hypotonia (low body tone) and any condition which means the child is unable to remove the blanket independently.

What if my child is between weights?

Our weighted blankets come in 1.5kg, 2kg and 3kg. If 10% of your child’s body weight doesn’t fit squarely into one of those categories, most experts recommend the lighter weight as too much pressure may be uncomfortable. We want the blanket to feel like a warm hug, not a tight squeeze! The weight needs to be evenly distributed to be most effective. If you go for a heavier blanket, but end up only using it over half of your body, it's not really doing its job.

The best option is to try it out and pay attention to how your child reacts: if you pick up any discomfort, change to something lighter. We offer a 30 night guarantee to ensure you can get it just right for your child.

For our weighted blankets to do its job, it should cover your child from their toes to their neck with evenly distributed weight.

How long does it take for weighted blanket benefits to work?

The time it takes for a weighted blanket to begin working its wonders, varies from child to child. Like most new things, resting under weight can take a little getting used to, but the right weighted blanket should condition your child's mind and body to a better way of sleeping in no time.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you start using a weighted blanket:

    • If you need to, ease your child under it by starting with only covering your legs.
    • To help your child's body adjust, use your weighted blanket for only 30 minutes the first two or three days.
    • Give your child at least 10 nights to start feeling the benefits.
    • Weighted blankets work best when they’re part of your bedtime routine. Did you know that it takes at least 18 days to form a new habit?
